Nadia Tarnawsky and Vira Hanchar will perform Укриття/Shelter - an interactive piece which examines ordinary life interrupted by air raid sirens, time spent in bomb shelters with puppets and the absurd destruction of war.

Ukrainian Folk Song Intensive
January 28 - February 25, 2025 - In person
Cost: $375 ($25 of which is donated to the Ukrainian Museum-Archives)
Explore the richness of Ukrainian traditional harmony singing with Nadia Tarnawsky. This 5 week course in traditional Ukrainian folk songs will include lyrical songs, ritual songs and calendar songs from a variety of regions in Ukraine. Participants will meet for 5 in person group sessions and have 5 thirty minute individual lessons. There will be a sharing of songs at the end of the project. This course is limited to 10 individuals (minimum age of 14). Ability to read Ukrainian/cyrillic text is not required.
Group meetings - Tuesdays from January 28 - February 25, 2025, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Song sharing - Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 3 p.m.
The group sessions and song sharing will take place at the Ukrainian Museum-Archives, 1202 Kenilworth Ave, Cleveland, OH 44113

Nadia Tarnawsky and Vira Hanchar will perform Postcards from Another World - a new multimedia presentation blending images, personal stories, and traditional folk songs from Ukraine. The piece offers glimpses of a faraway place — and reflects on how missives change when they’re coming from a war zone.

In traditional Ukrainian folk music there are a variety of spring songs. Some songs are sung early in the season when there is still snow on the ground with the intention of awakening the spring and sending winter away. Other songs and dances are done once spring has become more established and the earth emerges into the season of growth and renewal. This presentation by Nadia Tarnawsky will examine some of these variants as well as provide an opportunity to sing some vesnianky.
