Songs for a Ukrainian  Wedding
Thursday, June 12, 2025 - Online workshop - Ukrainian History and Education Center, Somerset, NJ
A traditional Ukrainian wedding transpires over several days and includes a series of special moments and rituals. These include the engagement, the making of the wedding bread, the dressing of the bridal couple, the blessings bestowed by the parents, the ritual of marriage, the celebration, and saying farewell to the bride. Each of these moments is accompanied by the singing of the community. Join Nadia Tarnawsky to explore and learn some of the songs of this rich folk tradition.

Mothers and Sisters explores the lives of medieval nuns through their spiritual familial experience, with repertoire drawing from both Western Catholic and Byzantine Orthodox traditions of chant.

Presented as part of “Soft Launch,” a weekend-long festival/conference
Nadia Tarnawsky and Vira Hanchar will perform Укриття/Shelter -  an interactive piece which examines ordinary life interrupted by air raid sirens, time spent in bomb shelters with puppets and the absurd destruction of war.

Ukrainian  Folk Song Intensive

Explore the richness of Ukrainian traditional harmony singing with Nadia Tarnawsky. This 5 week course in traditional Ukrainian folk songs will include lyrical songs, ritual songs and calendar songs from a variety of regions in Ukraine.

Presented as part of “Ukraine at War: Life in a Time of Fear and Hope,” a symposium sponsored by the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University
Nadia Tarnawsky and Vira Hanchar will perform Postcards from Another World -  a new multimedia presentation blending images, personal stories, and traditional folk songs from Ukraine.  The piece offers glimpses of a faraway place — and reflects on how missives change when they’re coming from a war zone.

Vesna Krasna: Beautiful Spring

In traditional Ukrainian folk music there are a variety of spring songs. Some songs are sung early in the season when there is still snow on the ground with the intention of awakening the spring and sending winter away. Other songs and dances are done once spring has become more established and the earth emerges into the season of growth and renewal. This presentation by Nadia Tarnawsky will examine some of these variants as well as provide an opportunity to sing some vesnianky.

Buried Words, Seeds of Hope
